Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland reintroduced audiences to the colorful cast of characters created by Lewis Carroll in his classic children’s books, and which were popularized by the animated Disney film in 1951. The success of the live-action film is sure to fuel demand for Halloween costumes based on the Alice in Wonderland characters for costume parties and Trick or Treating. Let’s look at some of these characters and the outfits that you could wear to recreate them.
Alice is the most simply-dressed and normal of the story’s cast of characters. The animated film has forever established Alice as wearing a blue child’s frock and a white pinafore apron. However, since in the new film Alice is now a young woman of nineteen, she is shown in the beginning as simply wearing a blue dress without the white apron, although she does change clothes several times in the course of the film, at one point even sporting a suit of armor.
The Mad Hatter is one of Alice’s most colorful characters; he wears a typical Victorian men’s outfit complete with, of course, a top hat. However, the outfit is given a playful twist with touches such as a colorful over-sized bow tie, a bright scarlet vest, reels of thread threaded through a piece of string and worn like a bandoleer, and a brightly-colored sash worn around the hat.
The Red Queen is the villain of the movie; she wears an Elizabethan dress with a high collar and a nipped-in and shaded waist to suggest a wasp-like silhouette, along with a heart-shaped wig. The color scheme of the outfit was intended to echo that of a playing card, with the dress mainly in dark red and black with white hearts lined with gold thread on the skirt.
The White Queen is the most glamorous of the Alice in Wonderland characters, sporting a snow-white dress inspired by Victorian women’s styles, accessorized with tiny jewels and silkscreen snowflakes to give the costume some sparkle.
